In A Rose For Emily, Emily’s father dies and she does not confess this to the townspeople for a numerous amount of days, leading them to believe that she just does not want to let go of him because that is the only person she is really close to. Emily is extremely protected as a young girl by her father, so when he passes away, she has the opportunity to gain her freedom and do as she pleases, however she remains to keep to herself. Before her father died and the older generation was in charge, they did not have to pay taxes, now there is a new generation in town, and they are trying to force Emily to pay her taxes but she refuses.
