The car was dying, or so I thought. I had to pull over and it stopped. There was smoke coming all out of the hood, and the smell was horrible. Calling my parents, secretly excited, I broke the news to them. My dad came and looked at the car and told me that it might not be drivable anymore. I thought to myself that this was it, my chance for my dream car! i had to have a car so that I could drive to school and my parents could each drive to work. I was going to get a new car. By this point, as long as the car was not that old mini van, I would be happy. My dad took the car to the shop to see what the problem was, the transmission had died. Instead of just getting me a new car, my dad replaced the transmission in the old Honda and I was devastated. I knew that with a new transmission, the car would be able to last longer. I was stuck driving this worn out white van instead of a new pickup truck. Now, I was not upset enough to die, but it was a sad time in my life. Thinking for about a whole week that one is going to get a new car is exciting and exhilarating. Then to have one’s happiness be crushed was a painful experience. Once reading this short story and deciding what example from my life to use, I realize how upset one can become from an experience like this example. People can become depressed from an experience like this one and in some cases

The story of an hour by Kate Chopin furrowed my brow upon reading the first paragraph because of the context and format. It had a choppy introduction that I had to read and re read several pieces to get an understanding of what was happening. The story twisted at the end when Mrs. Mallard is the one who actually ends up dying instead of her spouse. From reading the story I’m not sure Mrs. Mallard was sad about her husband’s so called death or happy she no longer had to be married. When she realized her life would no longer revolve with her spouse she felt free.…

The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin is an example of a modern short story because it fits into all four parts of the criteria. The story emphasizes subtle characterization rather than fast-paced plot, implies rather than states facts and psychological truths, emphasizes revelation rather than effect, and because of dramatic irony, readers have more knowledge of events than the characters do. The first criterion is that the story emphasizes subtle characterization rather than fast-paced plot. The story does meet this criterion. In the story, we learn about the characters through their actions and words, and the details that are used to describe them.…

One of the most important days in my short 17 year old life is the day I got my first car. Before owning a car I had to barrow my parents’ cars to go anywhere. My parents only had two useable cars, they were usually used by them every day, therefore I had no means of self-transportation to school, to CPCC, or to see friends. This was very inconvenient for me and my family. As the days progressed it became more obvious that this was a serious problem.…

My personal interpretation is that Mrs. Mallard has heart problems and the shock from hearing about the death of her husband was too much for her. The author mentions that she felt free after she heard the news about Mr. Mallard. I believe that Mrs. Mallard was not fully aware her husband was gone and never coming back. If she would have realized this she would have acted differntly once she realized that she would be doing everything on her own for the rest of her life. When Mrs. Mallard saw that her husband was still alive at the end of the story, she did not die from joy, instead she died of shock.…
