Identify Elements in “The Story Of An Hour Mrs. Mallard was a confused lady that had mixed emotions about her husband. She believes that he has passed away and Mrs. Mallard feels free. How does she really feel about that? By using irony, symbolism, imagery, and allegory the author builds tension and meaning to the story. There are so many feelings to clarify. Symbolism is the practice of representing things by means of symbols or attributing symbolic meanings. There was a hidden message in “The Story Of An Hour” that we later found out about Mrs. Mallard. She was secretly miserable with having to live with her husband Bently. No other person knows how she is feeling about her husband. She felt as if her husband was just taking over her and controlling her life. She had to cry because she had to, in fact her husband was supporting her. That was when the turning point began to unravel in the story. After a while she recognized that for once in her life she was finally going to be free from being trapped. At first she is feeling depressed, but then she soon feels free and knows that she will be happy when she really thinks about it. Sadly her “new” life was cut short when the return of her husband. Mrs. Mallard as we knew had a bad heart which was no help when she noticed that Mr. Mallard was not deceased. The surprise struck her heart as she laid her eyes on her husband and fell to the floor. Everyone thought it was a death of joy, but secretly it was a death of shock that she was not going to be living a free and fun
