I am comparing the short stories, “The machine that won the war” and “The story of an hour”.

In the story, “The machine that won the war” the main conflict was between John and Max. They argued about which machine won the war and why Max wouldn’t tell John the data he gave his machine. Max thought John wouldn’t believe him if he told him the data he put into his machine, nevertheless he finally told John that he didn’t think he would believe him. The setting of this story was in the 1900’s and it was clearly stated. The main characters, John and Max, were very serious and business minded. This paper is an analytical thesis. Almost like a hanger. In “The machine that won the war” it ends with, “Heads or tails gentlemen? Said Swift.” In “The story of an hour” it ended with, “When the doctors came in they said she had died of heart disease-of the joy that kills.”

Both stories included a conflict. “The machine that won the war” had a conflict between people. In “The story of an hour” in some form, it was the same conflict. “The story of an hour” had two deaths in it and in “The machine that won the war” it had none. In “The machine that won the war” John and Max were business minded and very serious. Where “The story of an hour” had a more freeing feeling and not so tense feeling.

This is my comparison and contrast essay of the two short stories “The machine that won the war” and “The story of an hour”. I hope I got across to you the issue and ideas of both stories.

The two comparations that I have is one that is a book, “Making bombs for Hitler” by Marsha F Skrypuch. The book’s setting is during World War II. It is about a girl named Lida who is from the Ukraine who is separated from her sister and is taken by Nazis who put her into a concentration camp and is forced with other children to help them in hospitals, sewing uniforms and of course making the bombs. Her main goal is to get out and find her sister. The other comparation that I am making with this book is the the 2012 musical movie, “Les misérables”, directed by Tom Cooper.…

These stories highlight some of the most important issues of the current era, both in different ways. In Eisenberg’s book The Carnivore Way, a more modern take on the current state of the ecological system. Eisenberg presents lots of logical facts and scientific statistics that are used to prove her point. In the other spectrum, Faulkner’s Big Woods collection tells a more narrative approach to telling the reader. He uses fictional characters to invoke emotions from the readers and insight his own messages to the reader, all while keeping the messages ambiguous to the reader.…

This story presents technological advancements that were relevant in that time which were mass-produced lethal weapons that were easily accessible to the common man. The author used this type of scenario to relay his message that life was an easy thing to end. With a simple press of a button, conflicts would instantly be resolved and peace would be maintained in the area. With examples and descriptive narrations of the events in the story, the author could portray this message to the readers. This idea was very much elaborated within the plot of the story.…

Differences in between the lines Each story a person shall come across will always differ from one to the next. Whether it is from a different point of view of how the grammar, tone, content, theme, texture etc. is used the stories are never going to be exactly the same; they will not necessarily be different either. Many stories have very similar motives to make you think, act and feel certain ways, like the comparison between N. Scott Momaday’s “The Way to Rainy Mountain” and Alice Walker’s “Beauty When the Other Dancer is the Self.” They compare and contrast perfectly.…

In his book, All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque is characterizing a young generation who lost everything in the Great War. He describes how Paul the main character, and his comrades perish one by one to the brutality of the war. The author describes how they become more dehumanized, as they fight endlessly for nothing. Because in many of the fiercest battles of the war, there is hardly any territory won or lost, yet the casualties are huge. Finally, the book has an anti-war message prevalent throughout as strong theme.…

The Sniper and Cranes have differences that give two opposite ideas of the story. The main focus of The Sniper targets the civil war and the repercussions that follow it, whereas Cranes focuses on the loyalty one has to family and friends. The Sniper expresses the toll the war has taken on the soldier and how it affects him by giving detail about the feelings and thoughts he has about the war. The author wants the reader to know that the sniper is dedicated to his duty and does not think twice about the decisions he has to make. In Cranes, the opposite occurs; Songsam goes out of his duty and gives Tokchae the chance to escape instead of taking him to be killed, as he volunteered to do in the first place.…

In “ Some of Us Had Been Threatening Our Friend Colby”, it’s about a group of friend is making a plan, and list of to do things for their friend funeral for they are going to hang him, for he “ had gone too far”.
