Story Of An Hour Women Analysis

Repression of Women in the Early Centuries The stories, “The Story of an Hour,” and, “Hills Like White Elephants,” are very analogous in ways. “The Story of an Hour,” is about a girl who has been controlled by her husband throughout the years of their marriage. Her husband dies within the story and the woman is overwhelmed with pure joy, but she doesn’t know how to feel about it. “She did not stop to ask if it were not monstrous joy that held her. A clear and exalted perception enabled her to dismiss the suggestion as trivial” (DiYanni, 40). To many people, this situation is very controversial in that she is joyful of her husband’s death. In the story, “Hills Like White Elephants,” it is about a young girl of color and an American man that are in a “relationship” and they travel everywhere together. They go in a bar and are having a conversation that is very symbolic of how decisions have consequences and is also symbolic of a bad relationship. “‘I’ll go with you and I’ll stay with you all the time. Both women in the stories are running away from something or someone. For example, the woman in “The Story of an Hour” is wanting to be free from her husband and is wanting to live her own life. She feels as if she is trapped and a prisoner in her own home and around her husband. In the story, “Hills Like White Elephants” the young girl is pregnant and the American man is making her feel as if they will be so happy without the baby. She begins believing what he is saying and second guessing on if she should actually have the baby or not.
