During the time period that the two stories, “Story of an Hour” and “The Yellow Wallpaper” took place, the confinement of women was the norm of society whether self-inflicted or against one’s will. The authors of the short stories are Kate Chopin and Charlotte Gilman Perkins, their writings are very similar in some ways but they also have differences. The main focus is the setting, in the two short stories, “Story of an Hour” and “The Yellow Wallpaper” the settings are remotely the same but the way that they ended up in the setting is where the difference come into play. Due to her illness the doctor tells her that the only cure was the rest cure so he locks her in a room and strips her of everything that she has associated with her everyday life. This action successfully began the striping of her sanity. Most would agree that leaving her alone with the horrid wallpaper for just a while would be enough to start her downward spiral of mental health, but John states, ”I don't care to renovate the house just for a three months' rental” (Perkins 3). Most would agree that this quote shows the dismissal of Jane’s opinions and more importantly, the magnitude of her prescription of unwelcomed rest.
