In our world things are not always fair as they should be, but when some people have that determination absolutely nothing can completely stop them from accomplishing their goals. In the story of a Worn path by Eudora Welty, three themes that stood out were, love, racism and dedication. The main character was Phoenix Jackson. The story was set in December in 1940’s southwestern Mississippi. The first theme love is the most important theme of all, for this is the reason this old woman is out in the atrocious weather of December. The story is called the worn path because Phoenix constantly makes this trip to get medicine for her grandchild who has swallowed Lye, in hopes he will become well again. In the story it also says at the end with the 10 cents that she acquired during her long, strenuous journey she still decides to buy the child a toy rather than buy her self-something hot to drink for her journey back. All of this shows her deep love for this child.

In 1940’s Mississippi black people did not have any rights, this was the norm for Phoenix. One example is when she fell in to the ditch. A white hunter helped her out and then says “anything broken Granny”. He then asks her where she is headed and laughs at her saying colored people couldn’t miss seeing Santa Claus. When in all honesty she is making the long journey to cure her sick grandchild because she is all he has. And before she is back on her way, the hinter holds the gun to her and says “does this gun scare you”? As if to intimidate the old lady and remind her of what she already knows, Black lives don’t matter. But still Phoenix pushes on even though she can be hurt, but her grandson is what she lives for and she will stop at nothing to make sure he is cared
