Nearly every summer and winter break of my childhood was spent in the heart of Tillamook Country— a small coastal community called Neskowin. My family would gather with a rotating pool of close relatives in our favorite beach rental, dubbed the Octagon House for its distinct shape, central fire pit, and wrap around porch. For the children, the vast beaches served as open fields for soccer and football. The coarse sand an open canvas for castle blueprints and secret messages. Sand dollars switched hands as if they were currency.…

I feel someone shake my shoulder gently. "Nooooo. " I groan, curling up more into Hermann's parka. My head pounding and my throat scratchy. She had always loved the feeling of blood on my face, even when it wasn't mine. She was the night sky, a vast amount of darkness with holes all over that couldn't be stitched together. That's why I hid her under the bed so no one would ever find her, because if they ever did I would have to put them to sleep too. Her eyes were equanimity, I had to keep them in a jar beside me every night. They were the colour of an unencumbered rose , lost due to perfidiousness.…

Its kind of hard to imagine a place pure and free of teenage issues and dramas. I never thought I would be able to escape my problems in the real world. I never thought I would be able to let go. But know as I sit on this rock, staring at the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen, feeling the wind blow my hair back, and smelling the wonderful scent of nature, I know I've escaped. I have finally found a place where I can let go of all my worries and all my stress.…

Haven It was cold and dark. I don’t know why I was still here. There was a large stray rock separate from the others clumped along the beach, so I made my way over to take a seat. I wasn’t planning on going home just yet. The beach makes me calm, the noises all natural and non-violent, unlike the house I’ve grown up in.…

Well, I made it to camp yesterday evening. I wanted to get here earlier and start preparing for the hunt before the rains came but when I tested my campers electric brakes they weren't working so I troubleshot and repaired the brakes. Of course, I had my tools buried in my truck for the trip but I managed with a pair of scissors and some wire nuts. I found two wires broken where they come through the axle. The Wet had awoken me again. Much like the patients of the hospice ward, it too had taken permanent residency amongst us feeble, withering souls. Its humid and ungodly presence magnified the discomfort I felt laying between the crisp, sterile sheets of the hospital bed. My senses were only exposed to the incessant beeping of heart monitors, the irritating glare and buzz of the fluorescent lights and the wretched stench of the Wet. But a soft glare from the moon that bathed the room with light radiates a strikingly minimalistic but beautiful aura.…

Behind my old tan house on McClure road is an open opportunity to have as much fun as you want, and as a kid I took advantage of that. I loved going out to just use my senses and explore. I would see how many different animals I could see or hear. I would listen to the birds hum their songs, and hear the chipmunks run aimlessly through the woods, cracking sticks every step of the way. Who knew such little animals could make so much noise!…

Alternative Escape I have always been fascinated by music festivals. It amazes me how people with different ages, are eagerly passionate to attend to all types of festivals. It shocks me that at some time in history someone thought that people would enjoy this, citing the madness and frenzy of a feeling and the desire for it never to end. For me it’s precisely the thrill and excitement of having the experience of enjoying the music while connecting with others around me. My first experience with music was through my cell phone, I wanted to listen to something new.…
