Story Behind My Learning

Improved Essays
The Story Behind my Learning I am a senior in high school which means I have learned, for 13 years of my life, how to read, write, look for details in a writing, close read, and how to fix my own writing. That seems like a lot, but I know that I still do not know everything about reading and writing. I can’t specifically remember the first time I started to read, however I do remember maybe in first or second grade, copying words over and over again trying to learn how to spell them. Then, I definitely remember in third grade starting to write in cursive and learning how the sign my name. After third grade, writing in cursive became foreign to me. All I remember is knowing how to write my name in cursive so I can sign my name on things in …show more content…
Although, I did not particularly like all the books I read, it was a good thing because it was letting me be exposed to different types or writing. Through the years there have been a few books that I have enjoyed. More than likely if I liked the book it was probably a fiction story, because those are the stories that grab my attention the most. That was until I read “The Last Lecture” which was a fantastic book about man who had cancer and had to present his last lecture to a group of college students. I really enjoyed this book especially because Randy Pausch (the author) wrote the book the same way that I write. He was also a very funny writer. He did not sit there and tell jokes though, his humor was mostly from little things and stories he told. He has a dry sense of humor which I like …show more content…
The essays would be about just about anything. They could be free writing where I could write about anything or it could be a nonfiction topic. If I had the choice to free write about anything, my go to writing would be a fictional, funny story about talking animals. I could not give you a good reason to why I only write those stories, other than, I love it! I love writing silly stories that do not really have a point to them. In seventh grade we had to write an essay about Martin Luther King Jr. for a contest. The essay had to be a standard five paragraph paper and right then I was struggling to think about enough information I could write about him. I never have been good at writing because I write short, simple sentences which are good sometimes, however not always good when you have to write a certain amount. I am not the kind of person who can write long, detailed sentences full of fluff. So, I do struggle with writing. On the other hand, if you give me an interesting topic or let me write about anything, I could probably write nonstop with plenty of stuff to say. Long story short, it’s not that I can’t write, it’s that I do not really write as well as I am capable

For eighteen years, I have roamed this earth, and for thirteen of those years I have been able to harness my craft in writing. As I look back on those times, I see how much I have improved. I learned that I despised word count essays and loved creative writing assignments. My literacy journey began in kindergarten where they taught us how to write out the alphabet, my name, and simple sentences. I don’t remember everything that about my time in kindergarten, but I do remember how frustrated I was trying to write out my name.…

I connect with this quote because I believe it is a very accurate description of myself when I do not write. For me writing gives me the ability to get out of my own head. Writing allows me to put my anxiety on paper. Everything that I can't stop obsessing over leaves my head, enters my fingers, and befriends the paper.
