However, when comparing the people to their surroundings it is evident that the survivors are not the focus of the painting, they are very small when compared to any other component of the painting; they are detailed enough to understand they are human but they lack the fine detail that everything else has. There is one man clinging to a boulder trying to escape the waves and another dragging a women to shore who is either unconscious or dead while another man tries to help them. The one man that is trying to help is in a dark raincoat, wearing gloves and a rain hat which makes the viewer question if he was involved in the shipwreck or just happened to be nearby when everything happened because the three coming from the water are dressed in plain clothes and not as
