Storm Water Infrastructure

Decent Essays
A climate change is occurring, and in the coming years, it is expected that in many urban areas heavy rain events will increase in intensity and frequency. This will become increasing problematic since the city sewerage systems cannot cope with sudden amounts of water. In dense urban areas, there is too little infiltration space for heavy rainfalls. The available space is either built up or intensively used as impermeable public domain. In some parts of the city, inundation occurred time after time, causing trouble and damage to public spaces as well as private properties. However, updating infrastructure is very costly, especially in urban environments. Finding funding to maintain existing storm water infrastructure is also difficult. Constructing

Like Amar, O’Brien goes into extensive details in his writings to better explain his point of view. Throughout chapter six of storm center, O’Brien gives multiple examples and details on how the supreme court and American way of life impact one another. After reading this chapter I feel more educated on the impact of the American life and supreme court and gained knowledge on information I did not know before. Three main points that caught my attention throughout this chapter were: the impact of public opinion on the supreme court, media coverage and the supreme court, and the implementation of unpopular supreme court decisions.…

There is a lot of planning that goes into where water can be drained; this includes knowing how much water different surfaces are able to absorb in order to put drainages in the most efficient locations. He begins by exploring the city’s watersheds. “The goal [of the storm water system],” says Huler, “is to take something that’s spread out, like rain, and get it out of the way without concentrating it any more than you absolutely must” (Huler 34) The author goes on to describe the ways that his own city of Raleigh, North Carolina handles storm water runoff and drainage; in the past, the city attempted to turn the creeks into tunnels. They built a mall on top of it, and the mall often floods because it was not thought out well enough.…

Flashfloods can wreak havoc within seconds to hours after the onset of a storm. Due to the rapidly increasing water levels which flow with a devastating swiftness, flash floods can be deadly. When flash floods are compounded with an urban area in which much of the surface area is impermeable streets and buildings, runoff occurs rapidly because water is unable to sink into the ground. Additionally, mountainous areas are also very susceptible due to steep topography, which funnels water into canyons and gullies. If people or animals are caught in a low spot in a mountainous area it can be extremely dangerous.…

The original reasons for its concrete channelization include controlling its unpredictable path as well as preventing floods from occurring. However, today the river is much less than what it once was largely due to its current concrete state. As California continues to experience the worst drought in its history, the channelization of the Los Angeles River only contributes to this problem. Given that the natural soil is no longer exposed to allow the absorption of some of the river’s water as it flows overland, there is much less available as groundwater. Furthermore, the impermeable nature of the concrete not only prevents water from being absorbed by the earth, but actually helps move the water into the ocean as fast as possible.…

A great example of this push towards collaboration is the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District (MMSD). MMSD has received grant money to build “Green Infrastructure,” meaning building higher capacity storm water systems and rain capturing methods. MMSD has been working with “private and public partners to invest to a goal of building 740 million gallons' worth of green infrastructure storage capacity by 2035 in Milwaukee” (Behm MJS). Green infrastructure can be absorbing rain from porous pavement in streets and parking lots to trees and 55 gallon collection drums, MMSD is replacing conventional asphalt streets with “permeable pavement, allowing up to 27,000 gallons of rain in each storm to seep into the soil” (Behm MJS). A great example of future infrastructure improvements is a green roof that will be installed in the new Northwestern Mutual tower “1/3 of the roof of the Commons building build next to the tower will be covered with perennial and annual plants to absorb at least 36,400 gallons of water in a storm” (Behm…

The secondary storm water system consists of all the minor drainage and storm sewers that collect and transport storm water to the primary system. According to the BCS Unified Storm water Design Guidelines, evaluation of the 2-year, 10-year, 25-year, 50-year, and 100-year design storms are used to reach the maximum design storm. The resulting maximum design storm is then used for detention facility calculations. In addition, the 100-year design storm needs to be evaluated for the effects of resulting flows on downstream drainage systems.…

One solution is to make more fresh water available to use . This can be done by building more desalination buildings that will remove all the minerals from fresh water. However, this is very expensive and our city could not afford to do this. Another possibility is to educate the kids and the adults so they do not waste water. Another solution is to protect existing water supplies like underground supplies and take steps to prevent them becoming polluted.…

Mexico City is collapsing in on itself due to dangerous climate change. There is a severely high demand for water, especially during hot weathers or in the case of a drought so there is a constant need to drill deeper into the ground for more. The grounds that are being drilled are ancient clay lake beds and have begun to weaken and fall apart further, as a result from the drilling. Because of the heat, people will be in much greater need for water, placing additional stress to tap reservoirs and the clay lake beds. Climate change can easily be the end of this city, affecting millions of people.…

The green infrastructure to be provided needs to be well thought-out and planned to obtain maximum impact. Green infrastructure is made up of corridors, patches and overall matrix. Corridors can contribute to flood storage, also can small patches, although to a lesser extent. Both the matrix and patches can add to rainwater infiltration, especially on sandy, faster infiltrating soils. This suggests that there might be a case for restricting landfill development on these types of soil because of the contribution they can make to rainwater infiltration if they are kept as green spaces.…
