Stop Blaming Video games! Nowadays video games are one of the most popular ways of entertainment. They have shown different kinds of art styles, from cartoon style to highly detailed worlds with great realism. Video games have become a new way for people to distract themselves. After all, they are just another form of entertainment as TV series and books. However, in last few years video games have become part of a long debate and controversy because of their violent content. Because of their violent content video games have been blamed for being harmful to children. According to Michel Gallagher, FBI statistics show that youth violence has been reduced and has declined in recent years as video games popularity increased. Sales of violent videogames have significantly increased while violent crimes have decreased. The total sales of video games consoles and computers have increases 204% from 1994 to 2014 only in the US, while violent crimes decreased 37% and murders by young people fell 76% (Gallagher). Of course Gallagher does not claim that the increasing of video games sales have caused the decline, but his opposes to the idea that videogames create violence among young people. There are many factors that could reduce the crime rates, for example, more job opportunities, improvements in quality of life and others. In addition, the amount of young people arrested decreased 63% from 1994 to 2012. The number of student in high school that were involved in a fight decreased from 43% in 1991 to 25% in 2013 (Gallagher). Moreover, the You Tube channel Healthcare Triage released a video were they talk about gun-related murders and video games consumption (the amount of money spent in videogames) in several countries including the US, Germany, United Kingdom, South Korea and the Netherlands in 2008. The research found that the US was the country with the least video game consumption but the most with gun-related murders while other counties have less crimes and consume more video games. The US had around 310,000 murders and the game consumption was around $42 million. Germany had 20,000 gun-related murders while the game consumption was around $44 million. The next country was the United Kingdom were they had 10,000 gun-related murders while the game consumption was about $58 million South Korea was one of the counties with the highest game consumption, but the lowest gun-related murders.
