Porter and Benjamin Porter purchased a large tract of land from Eulogio de Celis, the son of the owner of Rancho San Fernando. The land the Porters received was west of present day Sepulveda Boulevard, which included Chatsworth, and Maclay’s land was east of Sepulveda Boulevard. The Southern Pacific Railroad opened a tunnel through Newhall Pass, allowing for rail lines to and from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 1876. After Lincoln established the Homestead Act, Neils and Ann Willden Johnson settled in Chatsworth, in an area called Brown’s Canyon. The official birthday of Chatsworth is March 10, 1888 when George Crow filed a map of a subdivision called Chatsworth Park with the Los Angeles County Recorder’s office. According to this map, Chatsworth was a farming community divided into ten-acre family plots, and originally there were only three streets: Ben Porter Avenue, Devonshire Avenue, and Fernando Avenue. The baseball program has been one of the most elite programs across the nation, helmed by coach Tom Meusborn. In the early 2000’s the program was at its peak, and in 2003 and 2004, the team was awarded by Baseball America/ National High School Coaches Association as the number 1 team. During these years the team was led by Mike Moustakas, current starting third-basemen for the Kansas City Royals, and Matt Dominguez, role player for the Toronto Blue Jays. Both of these players were chosen in the first round of the 2007 MLB draft with the 2nd and 11th picks respectively. Both players chose to forego college and immediately play in the pros, they turned down offers to play baseball at USC and Cal State Fullerton respectively. Starting from 2001, Chatsworth High School would go on to win 12 league championships, 6 CIF championships, and 2 national titles. From 2003 to 2004, the team would go on to win back to back national championships, with the latter team being led by Mike and Matt. Over that two year span the team boasted an unheralded 68-1 record and during that time, the team had a 54 game winning streak (a state record). Chatsworth Highschool’s accolades for their teams for four years would be a 124-11 record, 1 National championship, 2 CIF championships, 4 consecutive CIF championship appearances, and 4 West Valley League titles.
