Stomach cancer will affect nearly 25,000 people this year, with nearly 11,000 of those people dying, according to the website, cancer.net. Stomach cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide. It is important for people to understand the early signs and symptoms to detect stomach cancer. When stomach cancer is found early there is a higher survival rate. There are many genetic and environmental factors as well as random factors that may lead to the development of stomach cancer. Genetics plays a role in the development of stomach cancer. “People who carry mutations of the inherited breast cancer genes BRCA1 or BRCA2 may also have a higher rate of stomach cancer” (cancer.org). This disease is less common in Northern and Western Africa, South Central Asia, and North America.”. One of the big factors in increased stomach cancer in these areas is due to diet. These people eat foods that are high in salt, nitrites and nitrates. They eat a lot of smoked and salted meats. “There is considerable evidence that occupations in coal and tin mining, metal processing, particularly steel and iron, and rubber manufacturing industries lead to an increased risk of stomach cancer” (nobility.nlm.nih.gov). One of the reasons stomach cancer is increased in these occupations is due to environmental exposure to carcinogens. Environmental exposure to lead is also a factor in development of stomach cancer.
