The government would invade Aboriginal’s homes and physically take these children away from their families with no warning. These stolen children would be brought up “white” and forced to forget their culture and language. Most children’s names were changed from their cultural name. They would be physically, mentally and sexually abused by these white Australian’s and most of the time, these stolen children never saw their families again. These children would be brought up in missions or white families. Mixed race children would not be accepted in either Aboriginal or white communities. They felt unwanted and rejected. Being forced to forget their culture and being brought up by white Australian’s made them ashamed of their Aboriginal heritage. Most of the young children were told that their parents died or abandoned them and never told any children where their biological parents were. The children living in missions were constantly punished harshly and did not get enough food. They were constantly cold and malnourished. And received barely any affection. They didn’t have a lot of education because they were expected to work as manual labourers and domestic servants.
