Stolen is a book by author Lucy Christopher. Published in 2009, it was the author’s first book to be published. The book is set in present time and takes place in the Australian outback. It follows a girl named Gemma, who is 16 years old, and Ty a 24-year-old man. It is written in a letter format, directly addressed to Ty.
The book starts out with Gemma meeting a man at the Bangkok airport and thinks he looks familiar. While getting coffee, the man drugs her drink, gives her a disguise, and put her on a plane. Gemma later wakes in a small house in the Australian outback. There is nothing around, no people, not towns, nothing. Only herself and her kidnapper, whom we learn is named Ty. This is exactly what Gemma wants, and decides that she wont escape and try to live life with Ty for the next four months. Their relationship changes as the books goes on, and becomes more of a friendship. At one point, it is almost as though Gemma is content with living with Ty. However, this changes one day when Gemma is bitten by a snake and begins slowly dying. Ty’s anti-venom un unfortunately no longer works and must make a fateful decision to either let Gemma die or take her to the hospital that is hours away by car.
Black in and out, Ty tries to keep Gemma alive as they make the journey to the hospital. At one point it begins to rain, something that doesn’t typically happen in the outback. They sit and wait for the rain to stop while Ty tells Gemma stories about the desert. Gemma sees a side of the desert she hadn’t seen before and understands why Ty brought her there.
