The Influence on The Christmas Carol on How the Grinch Stole Christmas
A strong story can become many others. The traditional work of A Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens is based in the 1800’s, in a town of England. The main Character Ebenezer Scrooge is an old miser who hates the Christmas celebration in the town. Scrooge is haunted by 3 ghosts, The Ghost of Christmas Past, The Ghost of Christmas Present, and The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. The three ghosts haunt Scrooge because they are trying to make Scrooge see that he needs to change; they want him to see that he cannot continue to be greedy or selfish. Seuss drew upon the character types, conflicts, and themes from A Christmas Carol while still rendering the story new. For instance, the character of Max in How the Grinch Stole Christmas is similar to the character of Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol; both are subservient workers trapped in hardship situations under their greedy bosses. Furthermore, the conflict that Max experiences is comparable to the conflict that Bob Cratchit experiences; both Max and Bob want to celebrate Christmas but cannot due to suffering under their bad-tempered bosses. Lastly, How the Grinch Stole Christmas shares the same theme as A Christmas Carol, that Christmas Cheer comes from within, not from material wealth. When both The Grinch and Scrooge realize this, Max and Bob see their bosses change from grouchy and greedy to joyful and giving. This story is still relevant today because there are many people like Bob Cratchit and Max in the world, as there are many Scrooge’s and Grinches. In today’s society there are a growing amount of poor people because the wealth is going to the top percent of people. However, in today’s society, the people like the Grinch and Scrooge aren’t changing.
