Stock Socks

Dinner time has always been one of my favorite times of the day. Like most kids my age, pizza can usually be found as one of the menu items that I prefer. Dad doesn’t always agree that it is the healthiest of choices. No matter what she thinks, I will continue to think otherwise. My dad has always attempted to get me to eat daily portions of vegetables. These attempts have put somewhat of a social wrinkle in our relationship. I love my dad but he can sometimes take the vegetable issue a little further than most parents. Little did my parents know, I had figured out a way to defeat their system.

March 25, 1911 was another Saturday for the men and women of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. The women work their long hours in the horrible conditions that were provided for them. The men hovered over them and analyzed the women's every move. At the end of the shift the women were to stand in a single file line to have their purses checked, to ensure that they were not stealing from the factory. Little did the people know that on this Saturday something would happen that would not only change the lives of the workers, but also began a change for most of the factories.…

In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Dumbledore says, “One can never have enough socks.” Socks, such commonplace things that no one really notices them until they are gone and no one seems to ever have enough. No one knows where they go when they inevitably disappear. Socks are metaphors for the little things in our life that we barely notice and only miss when they’re gone, maybe forever. Maybe it’s the stranger that smiles at you when you walk by, maybe it’s the piece of art that has always hung in that one spot on that one wall, and maybe it’s the little things that you don’t really notice until they disappear or stop.…

Very few organizations had the influence and had the control over America’s underworld like the Chicago Outfit. The Outfit was a group of gangsters that were ruthless and they were willing to take any means necessary to get what they wanted. They took over a city and took advantage of a federal law that greatly benefited organized crime. The most famous of all mafia kingpins, Alphonse Gabriel “Al” Capone, controlled the Outfit and had a major hand in making it one of the most powerful organizations for many years.…

The recent housing developments in Hollister illustrates how an individual’s race and gender can allow them to gain an unfair advantage or privilege over others. Only individuals with access to a significant amount of wealth would be able to purchase these houses due to the incredibly high prices. More often than not, these individuals would be white males. As a result of their skin color and sex, they are able to have high skilled jobs and receive a higher paycheck than their colleagues. A recent article by CNN substantiates this assertion by revealing that African Americans and Hispanics are experiencing lower wages, household wealth, home ownership and higher unemployment in comparison to white Americans.…

I definitely find myself making a lot of purchases through them whether it be home décor, clothes, cosmetics, or just small gifts for a friend. When someone mentions Urban Outfitters, I think “modern”, “cool”, “trustworthy”, and “accessible”. UO is not only an online retailer, but a brick-and-mortar as well. More recently, one way I feel that they are able to pull people in is with their new loyalty program.…

Am I Fat? We live in a world filled with chicken parts cut into fun star shapes and cheeseburgers that barely have any meat on them. Veganism is ridiculed and “fit” people are considered anorexic. On the other hand, “we shouldn’t eat so much” and obesity is disgusting. From a young age, my parents have always enforced the idea of eating healthy constantly badgering me to eat my vegetables or have a piece of protein with my meals. Although I might not have understood why their reprimanding was important, over the course of these last few weeks in biology I have come to realize that having a sound diet in many ways encompasses what it means to be healthy and live life to its fullest. By actively moderating, recording, and learning about what I have been eating I can now clearly understand that my parents were right to encourage healthy eating in my home. My parent, specifically my mother, was always the one who cooked and influenced my healthy eating at a young age. When looking at my food logs for this…
