Stitches Song Analysis

The song Stitches was released in 2015 and performed by the artist, Shawn Mendes. The song has an acoustic version created by the original artist, Shawn Mendes, along with Hailee Steinfeld. Mendes and Steinfeld released their version of Stitches later in 2015. The two versions incorporate similar, and contrasting characteristics and argumentative tactics into their separate versions. Each artist utilizes different tactics in their respective version of the song in order to convey a precise message to the audience. Mendes’s original version imparts similar messages to those portrayed with Mendes and Steinfeld, but in different ways through sound, style, and video. The message that both artists attempt to display to their audience is to remove yourself from any situation, in this case a relationship, no matter how hard the choice or decision may be for you.

The video consists of the two artists in a room by themselves signing in a dialogue. By signing within a dark room the two artists establish pathos in contrast to the original version, leaving no distractions for the viewer and allowing the focal point of the video to be the lyrics. The song is sung in a slow pace compared to the original fast paced version. The singers establish credibility due to the slow pace because the lyrics are more decipherable. With no distractions and a slower conventional pace the viewer can understand the situation that Mendes is associated with. The video does not contain imagery, the personification of love, or a fast pace, rather it contains no imagery allowing credibility to be established, personification allowing a simple video, and a slow pace allowing the viewer to understand the
