In the play, “Still this house stands”, by Gwen Pharis Ringwood, the most tragic character is Hester. Based on her behavior, it is likely that she has an attachment disorder which spawned from a lack of connection to the outside world. She often speaks as if her father is still alive even going so far as to say, “Everything will be the same now, Father. I’ll read to you Father. I’ll read the one you like” (Ringwood 70). Due to her attachment disorder, Hester fully believes her father is alive in some way. Tragically this compels her to let her brother and Ruth die so that they wouldn’t sell the house.
