Literature is valuable because it entertains, educates, and inspires. To start off, literature entertains because it makes the reader imagine what’s going on in the story like in the story ‘The landlady’ by Roald Dahl . Secondly, literature helps educates because it teaches the reader important lessons through the theme an example of this is in the story The Landlady. Finally literature helps inspire people by encouraging the reader to take action by giving ideas. just like in the poem ‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Angelou. Firstly, literature can inspire people by telling the reader to never back down, for example in the poem ‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Angelou it says “You may shoot me with your words,You may cut me with your eyes,You may kill me with your hatefulness,But still, like air, I’ll rise.” (line 1-4 stanza 6 Angelou) As a result of this part in the poem, it motivates the reader to be proud of reader’s self because it tells the reader that even if the nationality of the reader is not treated well there will be a day where everyone will be treated equally and that the reader should never be ashamed of it, instead the reader should be proud of it. Additionally, another way literature can inspire people is by encourage them to be proud no matter the nationality, prove of this is in the poem ‘Still I Rise’ it says “Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise” (line 1-4 stanza 8 Angelou). As a result of this part in the poem, it motivates the reader to be proud of themselves because it tells the reader that even if the nationality of the reader is not treated well there will be a day where everyone will be treated equally and that the reader should never be ashamed of it, instead the reader should be proud of it. Lasty the final point that confirms that literature can inspire people is by energizing the reader to fight against the oppressor, for instance in the poem “Still I Rise” it is all about how the reader should never bow down to another person. This helps the reader understand that the person should never bow down to another person whether it be a common bully or a someone who actually treats the person as a slave, the reader should always fight for the reader’s right.
