BUT what causes this stigma and discrimination? It is said that discrimination is an effect of a prejudiced behavior. This behavior roots from stereotyping in which we classify people we interact with, in groups.
We stereotype and stigmatize people with mental illness in a group entirely different from us because we don’t have an adequate knowledge of the origin of their illnesses, and the origin of these illnesses brings us back to mental health.

According to the American Psychological Association, fifty percent (50%) of cases of mental illness begin by age 14, and three-quarters begin by age 24.
First is that we should be aware of their actions. APA have given warning signs that can indicate to us that a person may be suffering from mental illness.
A person may have a mental illness if he or she:
Withdraws from social interactions.
Drop in functioning in relation to school, work and/or social activities.
Have a problem in thinking rationally or in organizing their thoughts. they show flat emotions or lack of initiative to participate in any activities exhibits irrational or illogical thinking showing peculiar behaviors mood changes
This does not necessarily mean that if they exhibit one of this symptoms is that they have a mental illness. these symptoms can only determine that a person has a mental illness if there is a persistent manifestation of these symptoms and it disrupts his daily functioning.
If we already observe the things mention above, it is then up to us to take action. there are many possible ways in which we can help
