Specifically, I am interested in the following chapters: Understanding stigma, Stigma in the field of Intellectual Disabilities, and Stigma related to Physical and Sensory Disabilities. These chapters provide an in depth look at the history of stigma, and the ways in which different disciplines in Psychology understand stigma. Approaching stigma from the perspective of different disabilities allows for a comparison between each. Further, it provides an in depth look at how stigma affects those with special needs. The authors set forth their own hypotheses about this relationship and then they conducted their own study that involved 43 participants with intellectual disabilities. This study led them to some very interesting findings that will be useful in my own study. For example, they found that those who have a decrease in self-esteem observe more instances of stigma towards themselves and those that observe more instance of stigma towards themselves have a lower self-esteem. Also, these two factors are influenced by how they compare themselves to their peers and the public.
