Robert McLiam Wilson was born February 24, 1964 in Belfast, Ireland. He published his first book called, Ripley Bogle, when he was 26, and Ripley Bogle is one of his most famous works. This novel won the the Hughes Prize, Rooney Prize, and the Irish Book Award. In the article “Sticks and Stones: The Irish Identity,” he is talks about himself and his real life experience and what he went through during that time. While racial prejudice and discrimination against people of color are universally condemned, Wilson argues that the insidious stereotyping of people, simply because of their cultural and ethnic heritage, is equally damaging.

Racial prejudice can be found everywhere from the Civil Rights Movement with Martin Luther King Jr, the KKK, and now with the Black Lives Matter Movement. The Civil Rights Movement was a movement to stop racial segregation in the 1960s. White people looked at African Americans as a lesser race. African Americans did not have the same rights and privileges as white people did in the 1960s. The KKK is one of the biggest hate groups to emerge after the ending of slavery, and they do not only hate African Americans, but also immigrants Jews, and anything else that does not go along with their standards. According to a Southern Poverty Law, in 1865, when the KKK was formed, during the Civil War, the Klan quickly shaped into a group that intimidate black people and puts together any white people that would help them, so the African Americans wouldn 't enjoy their rights and the ending of slavery. They often rode around in all white robes and on horses creating violence among the black community including raping black women and lynching black males. The Black Lives Matter Movement goes against racial prejudice. Black Lives Matter was created in 2012 after Trayvon Martin was unfortunately murdered because of the color of his skin, and his murderer got off free with no jail …show more content…
He also says, “it also produces people who will murder for lies they only half-believe and certainly never understand--for the Irish have always armed their ideas. We don 't have any white lies here anymore. We only have the deadly barbaric type.” (wilson, 1997, para. 16) almost mocking his own culture. The reason for saying the quote can probably be put into two totally different perspectives. He could be saying it because he feels like it is what people think of his culture and romantic life.
