Sticker Project Essay

The sticker project was an experiment for me, in that it was my first time in highschool seriously taking notes on textbook reading. What I found showed that it was likely not worth the additional time needed. My evidence suggests that students similar to me are not helped by doing the sticker project and are potentially harmed, but that more scientific testing is necessary to draw any conclusions. My quiz and tests from during the sticker challenge had a lower average than the ones from during the rest of the school year. In addition, I noticed that the quizzes and tests were qualitatively more difficult for me. The entirety of the class had a much lower average on exam #4, which happened toward the end of the sticker challenge. Also, during the jeopardy game played before that exam, the group that did the best by far was the one with no sticker challenge participants. I suggest that this is caused by a combination of a lack of note-taking skills and failure to comprehend the material while I was taking notes on it. Instead of thinking about the actual subject, I was only thinking about my notes because I was worried about taking satisfactory ones. …show more content…
During robotics, I had much less sleep than I did during the first half of the year. Sleep is known to be very helpful in learning and memory retention. I also have much more stress during robotics season. According to studies, increased amount of stress, even in the short term, can affect learning and in the long term it can impair LTP. It may be that had I had more sleep and not had as much stress, my quiz and test performance would have exceeded my non-sticker challenge Another confounder is that the material might have increased in difficulty during the sticker challenge. This is supported by the fact that my quiz grades gradually decreased over the course of the challenge instead of dropping suddenly when the challenge

On September 17, I observed first grade, Elkhorn City Elementary teacher, Dana Sheets. These rambunctious students had just came back from lunch and were still phasing to settling down for their lesson. The teacher did a wonderful job of catching their attention through the transition of calming them. She had the students complete a word puzzle on the wall out of their spelling words. She had made the boards setup on the wall so that each student can just run up and connect a puzzle piece, in which case is one letter to help spell the word out, the next student would follow behind, completing another word and eventually they would have the word spelled out.…

Pedagogical and instructional decisions are made using district curriculum maps that align with Common Core Standards. Bloom’s Taxonomy is referenced when crafting learning objectives and when structuring today’s lesson, which moves from a whole group discussion to small group collaborative learning, a theory by Kenneth Bruffee. The initial discussion is designed to increase comprehension of a text. This can be seen when students respond to questions about the plot (4:36), take notes (4:44), and annotate books (4:51).…

While I was in middle school my grades were utterly appalling; however, I had found the trick to getting my desirably high grade point average; that trick was to read. Before I found the trick of reading I wouldn’t try very hard on my assignments because I did not know what I was doing. I would procrastinate and get astonishing low grades; until, I grew up and took some time out of my day to study. Now I find myself reading constantly about topics ranging from animals to the question of if the American dream is still achievable in today’s society. My grades have also noticed an improvement; such as, my grade point average has been improved from below a two to above a three point five.…

Standardized testing, when all students throughout the country are tested on what they have learned through the year. It begins in the first grade and continues through the years of every young child’s education. It tests to see what the student has retained that year, and to make sure that the school is up to standards on what is being taught in the classrooms. While standardized testing is a good thing in making sure educators know what to teach, and it holds schools accountable for education, it is also outdated and has room for improvement. Standardized tests allows for a broad comparison of different states and school districts to see where everyone is placed.…

After reading chapter 3, 4 and 5 from Carey (2014) I feel like I can do better for the new school year. One recommendation that I would suggest to the administrators in school is to create a schedule of days where the students can take pop quizzes based on the material learned and material that will come after that day, and make those quizzes cumulative. On page 88, Carey (2014) describes the Spitzer’s experiment “the largest pop quiz experiment in history.” The conclusion of Spitzer suggest that when students take a quiz or test immediately, they learn and retain the information and need to be employed frequently (Carey, 2014). I have talked with teachers that suggest state tests (or district tests) too much work, and sometimes, a waste of time, and Carey mentioned something similar in Chapter 5.…

Introduction Project based learning (PBL) is a teaching approach that education professionals should consider integrating within the classroom. This teaching/learning instructional strategy provides students with inquiry opportunity; students are encouraged to pursue answers to their own questions by way of problem solving, data collection, and discussion. Finally, they will share what they have learned with an authentic audience in a creative format such as a project, digital presentation, or report (Drake & Long 2009, Hertzog 2007, Hung, Hwang, & Huang 2012). Project based learning seems to directly align with the Common Core Standards. The new standards adopted by Florida (as well as many other states) require teachers and students to delve…

While children are in the early stages of growth, they have been praised and complimented on their good grades and intelligence. However, this type of praise and compliment is not the key to success in schoolwork and life. The most important key to success lies in the focus on effort not praises and compliments based off how well a child does on something, such as a game or test. Behavioral psychology or more commonly referred to as behaviorism explains why putting forth effort is important. Behaviorism falls under the category of a school of thought.…
