Everything started when Tyler co-wrote Aerosmith’s hit “Janie’s got a gun” almost 30 years ago, he knew he wanted to help young women who had been abused. This week the rocker saw that dream come to fruition with the opening of Janie’s House, a home for abused and neglected girls outside of Atlanta. Steven Tyler posted a picture on instagram on 12/7/2017 and his caption said:”Steven’s in the mix and Janie’s in the house!!! I've never written a song so beautiful as Janie’s house… This was two years in the making!! Spending the day with these girls… I'm just so proud of them! I'm just relieved they have a safe space to be who they are… To grow into amazing young women who will do great things in the world…”

Brownsville, Texas is the town that I was raised in and can still call home. It was rich with Mexican culture and delectable, greasy tacos but it was still an economically disadvantaged city meaning that there were never enough resources to guide students to better opportunities. Of course, I never knew I was deprived of such an apparent luxury until I came to The University of Texas at Austin. When this realization came, I became frantic because of how behind I felt. I began looking for all sorts of resources and opportunities the university had to offer.…

The crisp breeze rustled my hair as I walked out of my house on the fall September day with my dad drilling instructions into my head. It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. The car ride from my house was only a few minutes away from the fields where I would begin my baseball career.…

My father yells at me, “Have you even decided where you want to go?” For every birthday, my family and I go out to eat to one of our favorite restaurants. Lucky for me, I became the deciding factor. Being steak connoisseurs, my family usually goes to one of our local restaurants, Texas Roadhouse or Logan’s Roadhouse.…

I began to realize, these people were not broken objects without meaning or purpose. They could not be defined by their bodies, ages, or aliments. They could only be defined by their lives, passions, and purposes. Through my experiences with the inspiring residents during my first fieldwork, I was able to learn that everyone has a story to share; however, to see this you have to look past their external appearances. Antoine de Saint Exupery once said, “One sees clearly only with the heart.…

This article was quite disturbing. It was hard to believe that someone could strongly dislike Tyler Perry creations. “Tyler Perry can only represent Black men positively by throwing Black women under the bus (crunktastic, 2013).” I understand why the writer feels that way of Tyler Perry work. But I do not believe that Perry intentions are to present his work as being disrespectful.…

Communication can consist of delivering a message to even receiving information. Many of the children came from large families who were only able to give them limited attention, despite the fact that they desperately needed large amounts of individualized attention. The care that staff gave these children helped level the playing field for some of them. Despite their differences, all patients, first are foremost, are united by the fact that they are people who just want to improve their heath. Flames engulfed my blurred vision as my sobbing, curled up figure choked and convulsed. Oxygen depleted from my lungs as the smoke quickly drew in to replace it. The sky began to blacken, as did my perception.…
