Love is arguably one of the most complex feelings in the world. In the Greek language, there are four words for love; agape, storgē, phili and eros. The Japanese language has three words to illustrate love. Both languages use these different words to explain a different type of love and its effects. In modern English, the world love is used for various depths of admiration. In Stephens Schutzman’s “The Bank Robbery”, love is portrayed in vastly different ways for the bank teller and the bank robber. People can spend a life time working to get to the top of their career. In university, individuals obtain knowledge that could help them acquire a better job than someone without. Getting a better job often leads to a better salary and the possession of money provides individuals with a sense of power. Modern society, arguably, revolves entirely around the concept of money, so individuals can go to great lengths in order to obtain it. In an attempt to rob a bank, the protagonist leaves with not just money; but with love. He allows himself to stray from his mission long enough to somehow fall in love with the bank teller and leave with her. In his first note to her he mentions that “money is just like time and I need more to keep on going”. The bank robber feels as if he has no power without money. After the bank teller’s rebuttals, he compares money to love. He believes where he lacks power he can gain with money. When he realizes the chemistry between the bank teller and himself he soon finds power in love. When the robber decides he not only wants money but the love of the teller, his scribed conversation switches over to using money to metaphorically describe the bank teller. He tells her to give him the money so he can “run [his] hands through its hair”. When he felt as though his life was filled with suffering due to lack of power he was determined that money would be the only thing able to save him but upon arrival he decides to “chase the windblown letter of love that will save [his] life”. He begins to understand the power within love and allow himself to succumb to it. The bank teller knows what he is really looking for. When he first arrives and demands the money she tells him “all this money will not get you what you really want”. When the bank robber realizes his interest in the teller she complies telling him she loves him saying “this
