Steven Harper Short Biography

Steven Harper was born in Toronto on April 30, 1959. Already at high school he got an interest in politics. He joined the Young Liberals Club, and this was the beginning of his politically active life. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Toronto, but dropped out after two months. He moved to Edmonton, where he started to working in the petroleum industry. Harper started at the University of Calgary, where he finished his bachelor’s degree in economics in 1985. His political career started for real when he in 1985 started as the executive assistant to Calgary’s Progressive Conservative MP Jim Hawkens. By 1991 he had completed a masters degree in economics. Harper is the first prime minister since Joe Clark in 1979 without a law degree. In 1986 he left Hawkes’s side, and the year after he was involved in the founding of a new political party, called the socially conservative Reform Party of Canada. He continued focus on politics and public policy analysis, and in 1993 he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons as a Reform Party candidate. In 2002 Harper was elected leader of the Canadian Alliance, the successor to the Reform Party.
