Steven D. Levitt's Freakanomics

Improved Essays
“Freakanomics” by Steven D. Levitt fascinated me to how businesses play a part in every aspect of life, even drug dealing. Levitt compared a gang’s organizational chart to a McDonald’s version and it was quite similar, the gang even had a board of directors. “Freakanomics” showed how businesses play the market to their advantage, similar to how “Listerine did not make mouthwash as much as it made halitosis.” I am fascinated by how business can shape the world; I believe it is more than just academic understanding, it is integral to have leadership, good time management, creativity and motivation to be an effective business person. I have all these qualities and would love to improve upon these at university whilst studying business.
I have taken part in ‘The Deloitte Micro-Tyco Challenge’. As a result, my creative side came to fruition helping me to acquire and build upon new skills, such as decision making and problem solving. This challenge made me take charge and become a bold and independent thinker. It taught me how to work in a partnership, meet deadlines and I gained a critical understanding of organisations. We set up a stall in school and my confidence and communication skills greatly improved. From £1, we managed to raise £89.

Directing several younger pupils was a demanding job; however, it allowed me to prove my creative vision and strong leadership. I demonstrated my ability to communicate and produce an amazing piece of theatre under a time pressure. These qualities make me enthusiastic to learn more and strengthen my aim to be professionally involved in a business career. Similarly, I led Japanese club which included teaching basic Japanese and culture to other students. This allowed me to engage with the students in meaningful and constructive activities, increasing my involvement in

To be a leader, one must first earn the trust and respect of one’s peers and become someone that they would listen to. As a petite, easily distracted female, I often have trouble becoming a person that others listen to outside of the classroom. Thus, becoming this leader and being elected and inducted as the president of the York Suburban Trojan Theatre Club is my most impressive achievement in leadership. At first, people did not know who I was, so I was able to build a reputation for myself by becoming the props crew lead in all but official title. Still, when backstage, I have a reputation as a leader.…

As a junior at Northville High School, I am already discovering my passion for business through my participation and leadership roles in organizations such as DECA. I have obtained not only extensive marketing and general business knowledge through self-studying for competitive tests, but also practical communication, presentation, and sales skills while representing various business professionals in judged roleplay scenarios. I have placed at the district, state, and international level in my events, and this year I will have competed at the International Career Development Conference for my third year. These experiences give me a good foundation of understanding business concepts, and I plan to learn more about how businesses operate in the global market through the Business is Global program at the Kelley School of Business.…

The Northwestern R-I FFA Chapter is looking to reorganize the FFA Alumni. At one point, Northwestern R-I had an FFA Alumni, which was created to support and promote the FFA organization, FFA activities and agricultural education on local, state, and national levels. Personally I think having an FFA Alumni will benefit not only this chapter, but it will also benefit this community and surrounding areas. According to “Starting a local FFA Alumni Chapter Handbook,” FFA is a lifelong organization that begins in the seventh grade and lasts as long as you want it. Members can begin as student members and then activate their alumni membership or they may simply begin as alumni.…

When a child is born, one of the first things they do is open their eyes, little do they know how sight will control their lives. Children's eyesight develops from focusing on toys, following parents and being attracted to lights and colours. Eye conditions also develop in the early stages of childhood. From a young age, I grew up with an eye condition known as strabismus, only now do I know how my sight has been affected. Being slightly myopic, I became more intrigued in optics after being advised to wear glasses and realised when tiredness took over; when the spectacles were neglected, the intermittent exotropia misalignment (previously esotropia) in my left eye becomes more apparent.…

My first leadership experience came from being a voluntary work as a life- and management skills trainer, where I had to deal with different background, minds and studies trainees, to be the leader of my own session, the thing that let me build my communication, discussion and presentation skills.
