Steve Waugh - My Sporting Hero

Steve Waugh is a perfect role model for adolescents. Not only has this man reached some amazing new feats in cricket but after his retirement he started a foundation in which he helps kids with rare illnesses and diseases. Many of the people (aged 0-25) that have been helped by this foundation often have has little to no funding to help them out.

Before Steve Waugh helped hundreds in India and started his foundation, He was just a young man who was becoming one of Australia’s cricketing greats. Steve Waugh was a middle order batsman who captained Australia from 1999 to 2004. In 1999 Steve lead the Australian team to victory in the ICC World Cup. Throughout his time playing cricket he became one of 11 people to score an accumulative 10,000 test cricket runs (10927 runs). He also managed to captain the Australian test team to 16 consecutive wins resulting in the turn around of Australia in the 1999 ICC world cup. If all these achievements were not enough he went on to receive the Allan Border Medal in 2001 after being named Australia’s player of the year.

Steve had always put others before him from day one. Weather it was at home with his brother, on the field or with the children you could always see that he did everything due to his passion and commitment.

If you go back to the main things that make a “perfect” role model you see that Steve Waugh ticks off every possible thing. Steve is one of the most inspirational role models due to his sheer compassion in what he did on field and off the field. By now you should agree that Steve Waugh is the ideal role model for adolescents due to the sheer compassion he showed to captaining his team but most of all using his fame and money to benefit and help those who need it
