Steve Reich Critique

My son and I attended a percussion ensemble and steel band by Thad Anderson and Kirk Gay at UCF. To my surprised we enjoyed it very much. As noted in the first chapters of this course is the proper times to applaud and times to get up without interrupting the performance. All was brilliant music and beautiful harmony. My favorite piece was Reich: Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organs. This is a composition by Steve Reich in 1973. I believe this piece is a polyphonic texture. The memorizing sounds of the organ, vibraphone, marimbas, woman’s voices, and glockenspiels. I absolutely loved how you can hear every individual instruments and sounds. I like how they noted in the program the four sections of changes in key and meter. If you …show more content…
I am just learning, but I want to say this piece is mainly consonant. The reason I say that is a heard multiple notes in one from different instruments to come together in one. I would say this piece is preconceived. A piece like this would have to be practiced in advance. One of the things I liked about this piece is the changes it has in the tone and speed in the second half compared to the first. Same notes, same music, just different tomes, loudness and speed. In the beginning it was softer and slower than in the second half the piece became louder and bolder. The voice of one of the woman was amazing. All were amazing, but this one had certain parts in the piece that really brought all of the sounds …show more content…
The musicians had very little if any at all interaction with the audience till it came time to introduce and applaud at the end of the piece. Which I thought was great. I say that because they were so in tune and focused on their conductor. It showed so much dedication and love for their performance. The audience showed approval at the end of the piece by applauding and standing up. There were no movements in this piece. Which allowed me to focus on the music and notes being played. At one point I closed my eyes and just listened to all the different instruments and the woman’s voices with

As the piece progressed, this formation did not vary, other than to switch lines. Once on stage, I would describe the music to be happy, lively and carnival like. The dancers threw confetti onto the audience and began their overly dramatic variations of shimmying and hip thrusting. These movements were highly sexualized as each seemed to have been choreographed in order to make the dancer’s body shake. The dancers constantly switched between frontal and backward facings, displaying the entirety of the female body.…

The music was another language and it really contrasted with the movement, bt it still looked good. The performance was intricate, but there weren’t repetition or similarities. There aren't any specific motifs, but the style was very the same. The dance consisted of elongations of the legs or arms. The dancers really know how to use every part and inch of their body to make the dance come alive.…

In class we have been discussing tools for choreography such as juxtaposition, counter point, mirroring, cannon, and many others. A piece that I found called “Framed” by M&N Dance Company displays a lot of these different tools that we have learned about these past couple of weeks. This piece was beautifully crafted and since it was a duet I believe it was very difficult to provide as much variety as they did in this piece. One of the first tools they utilized was mirroring. This was easy to manipulate because there were only two bodies to work with however most of the piece the dancers are confined to the negative space of a larger picture frame.…

On November 12-13 of 2016 in Los Angeles, California, the 5th annual Camp Flog Gnaw carnival and music festival went underway. The event included tons of musical performances ranging from many different genres of music. Over the course of two days I saw many acts, but one that really stood out was a band called, The Internet. The Internet is a neo soul band comprising of 6 members, one lead vocalist, while the others play musical instruments like guitars, drums, keyboards, etc. As the sun set next to the USC Coliseum, the band took the stage with bright purple lights.…

I feel that this was wise, as messing with such familiar tunes could be risky in the sense that many people are attending with a preconceived idea of how it should sounds. Therefore anything less, or different may be more likely to fall short of their expectations. I personally enjoyed the performance being played as written, because it really allowed me appreciate all of the musical nuances and listen to the music in a new way. Seeing the musicians have a bodily reaction to the music, also helped me to discover the various feelings and qualities in this work. There reactions really reflected the emotions that were being felt and the qualities they were trying pull out of the music.…

It is great that we are showing music through social media to help people broaden their look on music. This symphony seemed like they were made to play with each other. The made very few mistakes and you could actually feel something about the music. The musicians made you feel as passionate as them about the music. At the beginning I got excited for the concert because of all the media they show on the ceiling and walls.…

It is quite difficult to generalize some of the aspects of several of these pieces. For example, although there were some pieces such as Ah! Je veux vivre and Toujours that featured a faster tempo, louder dynamics, and folk-ish, almost cheery, melodies, there were other pieces that featured a much slower tempo, minor keys, and serene harmonious melodies, such as in Am See and Dein blaues Auge. What could be generalized are some of the techniques used during some of the pieces; in general, vibrato was employed consistently by the voice, and the texture of most pieces could be considered homophonic in nature, excluding perhaps Fair is the Swan due to the exchange of melodies that occurs throughout the…

The different pieces were comprised of random sounds with no real time signature. I could hear what sound like people engaging in a multitude of activities. There were random sounds that seemed to gradually increase in volume, as if passing by the microphone. These pieces felt very relaxed yet busy with there being a huge collection of sounds in varying pitches and durations. Having listened to something similar to this in the past, I wasn 't too taken off guard by it and I found myself intrigued by the sounds of people talking near the microphone as well as others who seemed to be shouting from the distance.…

This piece is from the modern era as it was wrote in 2012. The piece itself was written to represent the landscape of Wallah Wallah, Washington. For the final project I decided to attend two piano concerts at the University of Colorado Boulder. The two piano concerts I attended were Hsing-ay Hsu (with Madoka Asari) as part of the Faculty Tuesday Series, and Andrew Ramos’s Doctor of Musical Arts Recital. Both of these recitals were a new experience due to the fact that I had never been to a piano recital at the University of Colorado before. Each piano performance was different, whether it was the music performed or the type of style of concert. Although they illustrated many differences, there were also some similarities in the recitals.…

The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…
