Every September in Coos Bay, Oregon, a race called the Prefontaine Memorial Run. The race is held in honor of a track athlete from Coos Bay named Steve Prefontaine. Steve Prefontaine did not win an Olympic gold medal, but Steve Prefontaine is considered to be one of the greatest distance runners who ever lived. In his senior year of high school, Steve Prefontaine, nicknamed Pre, broke the U. S. high school record for running two miles by nearly seven seconds. He ran two mines in eight minutes, forty-one and half seconds. Pre was not tall and lanky like some great runner, but he had determination.
