He packed just a bag of clothes, a strip of film and his camera as he explored the country, and subsequently the sub-continent.
It was during this period that his interest in photography reached its peaked. He realised his love towards capturing real unguarded moments. McCurry worked in India for a year, after which he travelled to Northern Pakistan.
During his time in Pakistan, he met some Afghan refugees who were living there as because their village had been bombed. He had not planned a trip to Afghanistan, but when the refugees invited him to witness the situation there, McCurry decided to go as a means of visually documenting the situation.
Disguised in native garb, he entered the rebel-controlled Afghan areas right before the Russian invasion.
What he witnessed shocked him to the core. Villages after villages had been bombed and destroyed.
There were moments when McCurry feared about his own life as he travelled through the conflict-filled region. As he interacted with more and more people during his journey, he began to understand that they wanted someone from the world outside of their own to observe their lives and current living situation as well as share their story with the rest of the
