In the 1950’s, America is remembered as “Happy Days”, which has as much or more to do with a television show with that title.
The show itself did not air until 1974 and portrayed the carefree, simple times through the high school characters' antics. The memory for most Americans of that generation was idyllic and reinforced further by shows such as “Leave it to Beaver”, and “Father knows Best”. “Ike” as he was affectionately known was a middle of the road type of guy. He was able to prevent democrats from expanding the New Deal while stopping republican's from reversing the major reforms. The earmark of the 50’s was a strong economy and peaceful times, which was what most people wanted after WWII and the Korean War. Security, peace and harmony are conducive to creativity.
Every generation must have its antagonist who generates a contradictory energy.
Perhaps the greatest controversy was rock and roll music and the splash of a new talent who was hated by most parents of the time...”Elvis Presley”. The 50’s were happiest when compared to the 1930’s great depression, 1940’s and World War, the social strife of the 1960’s and the pure indifference of the 1970’s.
Major events of that time was the formation of the CIA to fight the expansion of communism. The first major effort to fight Communism took place in Iran when Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh nationalized British Petroleum. To the CIA, any nasalization of a private company was outright Communism, which made them fear a greater involvement of the Soviet Union in Iran.
