Why is it that Martin Luther King is regarded as one of the most respected leaders of all time? After all, he wasn’t the only man who suffered in pre-civil rights America, so why him? How has Steve Jobs created a multimillion dollar company when his competitors are equally qualified to make all of the same products? As it turns out, all the great inspiring leaders, whether it's Steve Jobs or Martin Luther King, all think, act, and broadcast their feelings in the exact same way. It’s no mystery that regardless of whether you’re talking about business, politics, sports or even the military, the best leaders are top-notch communicators. is one of the most memorable speeches of all time, but why? Well, unlike other men who suffered in pre-civil rights America, Dr. King had the gift of powerful transmission. He did not simply go around telling people what needed to change in America. Instead, he talked about his dreams and his beliefs in such a manner that it appealed to the listener’s emotions and aspirations. The phrase, "I have a dream” is repeated in eight successive lines throughout the speech, making it one of the most often cited examples of anaphora in modern rhetoric (Dlugan, 2009). His message took such deep root with the audience that it inspired action. People who believed what he believed took his cause, and they made it their own, and they told others. Some of the members of the audience then created organizations to get the word out to even more people. The 250,000 people that showed up to hear him speak that day eventually contributed to Dr. King’s cause (Ross). People may argue that confidence is most important because as the leader, by staying calm and confident, you will help keep the team feeling the same. They argue that in doing so, it will maintain the team morale. However, no matter how confident a leader is feeling in his goals, the followers may not agree with the leader unless he or she knows how to communicate their confidence in an easy going manner. For instance, a person like Donald Trump has some great ideas on how to fix and improve America overall, however, the way he conveys these ideas makes him appear so over-confident that it is unappealing to some Americans. Trump states, "I don't have to campaign. I could leave here right now. They're going to vote for me" (McElveen, 2016). This overconfidence resulted in tons of Americans turning away from Trump’s ideas and beliefs. The capability of a leader to maintain the right amount of confidence while they are communicating their ideas is important but is not the single, most important factor in being a successful
