In the topic of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos, the speech has some major elements of Ethos (And the other rhetorical devices). In example, he mentions his personal struggles, such as this quote from him “All of my working-class parents’ savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn’t see the value in it.” (Jobs, 2005). He says this, to try and relate to the graduating students, trying to make them appeal to his credibility. This also supports his main idea, by helping the students relate to him better. This is why he can use emotion (Pathos) to connect to the graduating students more. For example, his diagnoses with cancer. They were tragic for him, and his family, and made him fear for his life. Around 2004, he was diagnosed with a cancer that doctors dismissed as near incurable, and it made him fear for his life. Later that week, he got a biopsy, which revealed that the cancer he had was curable with surgery. This leads to him talking about death in the speech, and saying this memorable quote, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it by living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma.”(Jobs, 2005).
