Steve Bannon's Struggle For Power

Politics is a struggle for power. The feud between President Donald Trump and his former Chief Strategist Steve Bannon is the latest example of this struggle for power. The Pros of a Donald Trump Presidency American politics have always fascinated me. But let’s be honest, politics can also be very dull, with its insipid candidates, anticlimactic voting system, and laws worded in such a way that would confuse even Joyce. In this week’s readings chapter 5 of H&S and chapter 19 of McCormick, the topic of both the various events of the cold war and the influences in the political arena are discussed. In particular both books talk about the various issues with the events of the hostages in Iran and the invading of Afghanistan by the Russians. The thing I found interesting was the concept of the hawks, doves, and presidential supporters. Not only is there relationship with foreign policies a major factor in the cold war era but also reflects the president of the time based on who is in power at the time.…

Understanding the relationship between the president and congress is key in understanding American politics. Congress and the president cannot avoid engaging with one another, with a constitutional set up that demands they work together constructively. Congress has its roles to play in policy making as does the president. The president and congress are given certain powers in the constitution, that power is divvied up, so that neither one of these branches has too much power at one time (Fisher 2007). The founders of the constitution were very distrustful of the presidency and feared if the president was given too much power it would lead to demagogy (Dickinson 2008).…
