Sterotoxic Effects On Fetal Brains

The lungs and airways are the most important exposure sites for involuntary exposure to NPs (Brown et al., 2000; Wilson et al., 2002), and can also translocate from the lungs into circulation and reach secondary target organs (Kreyling et al., 2002). Fetal brains are easily affected by blood-borne substances, including nano-sized materials due to the incomplete development of the blood brain barrier (Watson et al., 2006). Metal, metal oxide and carbon-based NPs as well as nan-crystals induce DNA damage in some experimental models (Singh et al., 2009). CB-NPs are efficient generators of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The formation of free radicals such as superoxide anion or hydroxyl radical may also be increased with high surface area and may play an important role in activation of the inflammatory responses to NPs (Donaldson et al., 2006) Thus, we hypothesized that, CB-NPs are attractive benchmark nanoparticles because their toxic effects due to containing small amount of organic impurities induced genotoxicity which is exerted primarily through inflammation and generation oxidative stress as reported by Jacobsen et al. (2008). …show more content…
The objective of this study is to investigate the neurotoxic effect of different concentrations from CB-NPs on avian embryo models biochemically through oxidative stress and antioxidant biomarker, assessing expression levels of genes related to the oxidative stress, apoptosis, and

In similar ways that neonicotinoid affects the central nervous system of bees, it also does similar harm to a human’s brain (Kuroda, 2012). The pesticide affects the neurons in the brain and slows down a human brains development (Kuroda, 2012). This is most dangerous in children because their brains are still developing (Kuroda, 2012). Through several studies done on rats, neonicotinoids have been known to induce the release of dopamine in the system (Kuroda, 2012). It affects mammals just like it affected bees.…

Fetal Abuse and Teratogens After reading the article about the possible legal ramifications for prenatal abuse, and teratogens in the book, I can see both sides of the argument. The concept behind DeJesus ' prosecution is often referred to as "fetal rights": the notion that unborn babies deserve the same legal protections as children (“Fetal Abuse”). Multiple women have been charged and went to jail for taking drugs while pregnant and giving birth to babies who test positive for the drug. From the outside looking in, it seems to me that any pregnant woman would avoid any possible teratogen, especially drugs. Women could justly be prosecuted for intentially doing illegal drugs while pregnant;regardless of whether or not the child is born…

    - The developing fetus does not breath by drawing in air into its lungs like an adult does. Instead, the fetus draws its oxygen from the mother’s blood where the oxygen content is low. The hemoglobin in adults consist of two alpha and two beta subunits. Fetal hemoglobin consists of two alpha and two gamma subunits. This allows hemoglobin to bind oxygen with higher affinity compared to adult hemoglobin, allowing the extraction of oxygen from maternal circulation.…

Although pesticides are commonly used in Canada for vegetable and fruit fields, several of them contain mutagenic properties such as gene mutation and DNA damage (Ahmadi 2011). At high concentrations some pesticides can increase incidence of cancer, suppression of the immune system, and neurological disorders (Ahmadi 2011). Pesticides bind with DNA through the grooves of the double helix, which in turn causes hydrophobic interactions between the pesticide and either the groove or wall of DNA (Ahmadi 2011). Pesticides bind covalently to DNA forming DNA adducts which increase the probability for mutations during replication (Ahmadi 2011).…

When discussing fetal circulation, it is not that simple because the mother is performing the actions that the child will be doing after birth. During fetal circulation, there are three small holes, or shunts, that direct deoxygenated blood so the blood can be transferred into oxygenated blood. The shunts may also be used to override organs, like the liver and the lungs, because none of the organs in the fetus are fully developed while in the womb. The small holes that pass the right and left atrium go through the foramen ovale, which allows the oxygenated blood to go from the right atrium to left atrium. Then the blood travels to the left ventricle and out the aorta to the brain.…

Among all the effects that alcohol has on prenatal development, fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is the ultimate result. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) consist if the harmful effects of maternal alcohol consumption on a developing fetus. Some of the effects of FAS include facial deformities where there is “small eyes, the absence of, or flattening of, the vertical groove between the nose and the upper lip (smooth philtrum); and a thin upper lip (Thompson, Levitt, & Standwood , n.d.) . It appears that the more pronounce these features are in affected child, the greater the likelihood that the child experienced prenatal brain damage. There is also a lot of evidence where studies prove that FAS has a great impact on learning and memory, motor…

Abortion is a highly debated topic in the United States ever since dealers sold substances promising to end the pregnancies as early as 1820. The first laws against abortion gave the mother a felony or a misdemeanor and it wasn't until 1973 when the supreme court made laws that forbid abortion unconstitutional. The court also since then has established that States cannot make laws against abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy, but could make regulations related to women’s health in the second trimester, and that states could make abortions illegal in the third trimester except when necessary to save the life of the mother. Ever since then states have made laws prohibiting abortion for one reason or another. One common place for a specific week of abortion is 20 weeks.…

Hypothesis Statements We are testing the efficiency of an in vivo tool for screening the effects of anti-cancer drugs on zebrafish embryos and comparing the results and their cytotoxicity with MTT assay of the MCF7 breast cancer cell line. The results will indicate if the drugs have similar effects on both breast cancer cells and zebrafish embryos. It is given that embryogenesis and carcinogenesis have similar molecular mechanisms, therefore it is expected that these cell types act somewhat similar.…

Often times while watching television or listening to the radio, a company will advertisement a product. Whether the product be an engaging toy, an effective cleaning chemical, or a new wonder drug, at the very end of the advertisement there is most always a disclaimer. “This toy is not safe for children under three years old” and “do not use this product if you are pregnant or breastfeeding” are among the more popular sayings. The reason for the latter disclaimer is likely due to the advertised product posing an environmental threat to a baby during both the prenatal and neonatal stages of development. The following research paper will address those certain environmental threats: What they are, where they come from,…

The effects of environmental influences are wide-ranging depending on the prevailing environmental factors. A particular stage of development fails to take place normally, especially the critical period when cells multiply and enlarge to form organs. Prenatal development is critical in determining the health and structure of a newborn. For example, exposure to chemicals, radioactive material, and drugs among other hazardous conditions may lead to failure in development of some body parts, stunted growth in babies as well as poor cognitive development. Severe exposure can lead to miscarriage or death during and immediately after birth (Hepper 2005).…
