Steroids are natural substances with many different effects in the human body, which begin over several days. The primary use of steroids in health care is to reduce inflammation and other disease symptoms. Steroids make the whole immune system less active, which can be very useful in illnesses where there is an immune component. Steroids are the ultimate anti inflammatory drugs. Steroids are a family of lipid molecules that includes cholesterol, steroid hormones, and bile salts. These amphipathic molecules are derived from two-carbon acetyl-CoA units, whose combination leads to the formation of five-carbon isoprene molecular units, and finally to the formation of a seventeen-carbon tetracyclic hydrocarbon, the steroid skeleton. The fused six membered cyclohexane rings each have the chair conformation . Each member of the steroid family has a structure that differs from this basic skeleton in the degrees of unsaturation within the ring system and the identities of the hydrocarbon side chain substituents attached to the rings. These substituents are in most cases oxidized to alcohol, aldehyde , ketone , or carboxylic acid functional groups. …show more content…

Among the craziest studies I read recently year was feeding people with a single serving of Brazil nuts to see what it would do to the cholesterol levels of the healthy volunteers. They gave 10 men and women a single meal containing zero, 1, 4, or 8 Brazil nuts, and they found that the ingestion of just that single serving almost immediately improved the cholesterol levels. LDL, or also-called “bad” cholesterol levels in the blood, was significantly lowered starting just 9 hours after the ingestion of the nuts, and by no insignificant amount, approximately 20 points within a day. Even the drugs don’t work that fast. It takes statins about 4 days to have a significant effect.…

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), primarily referred to as anabolic steroids, are synthetic variants of the male sex hormone testosterone that are either taken orally or injected into the muscles, or applied to the skin as a cream or gel. Anabolic steroids induce the protein synthesis in cellular tissues. This results in the buildup of cellular generations, especially in muscles, and in return can increase the strength and body weight in athletes (Zomorodian K et al. 3). Many people that are involved in bodybuilding, professional sports, and olympic athletics take these steroids to develop massive muscle growth in order to excel in their given sport. Today, it is estimated that one to three million people has abused anabolic steroids in the United States, which is higher than it has ever been (Zomorodian, K., et al.).…
