Risking your health for fame or getting an advantage is not worth it. Doping usage is known for bringing many health issues to athletes which is very concerning because there are hundreds of cases in which athletes have died from them. “Some of the effects are hypertension, cardiomyopathy, left ventricular hypertrophy, dyslipidemia etc. Stimulants such as ephedra and amphetamines are associated with multiple sports-related deaths. Blood doping also has been associated with myocardial infarctions, cerebrovascular accidents, and several deaths. Insulin administration in a nondiabetic athlete may lead to life-threatening hypoglycemia.” (Finnoff,Chimes,Murray) These are just only a couple of the effects that steroids have on athletes. Many people who have been connected to sports are aggravated with the choices athletes make because it is sometimes on the verge of being alive or death. The effects that comes with doping usage is also the effects on the different human systems. The systems affected are the hormonal system: disrupts the normal production of hormones, musculoskeletal system: disrupting the bone growth, cardiovascular system: heart attacks and strokes. One of these people is Norman Fost who is a professor of pediatrics and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin. He once said on the NPR radio station, “ Anabolic steroids do have undesirable side effects: acne,baldness, voice changes. But sport itself is far more dangerous, and we don’t prohibit it. The number of deaths from playing football is 50 to 100 times higher than from steroids. ( Katz) These people believe that there is a higher risk of athletes dying for example from concussion or other injuries than doping usage. Even though this is somewhat true, this does not mean steroids are safer. We should not forget all the lives that are gone because of steroids. You cannot differentiate a death caused from a physical injuries to one cause from internal injuries.
