People say that education is “the only way to reach the greatest number of [people]” (Crane). The public only hears about the positive effects of steroids, so they never even think about what the negative effects could be. Since they were never taught the negative effects, they are not able to produce an informed decision whether steroids are truly harmful or not. They compose the decision to use without knowing the extent of the effects. Another way to decrease steroid use across all sports is to create harsher laws in regards to the punishment for steroid use. While there are already laws in place in a majority of sports, athletes know the loopholes and how to avoid getting caught. Athletes that use steroids know how to bend and break the rules since they have been doing it for their entire career. Elite athletes, along with high school athletes that use performance-enhancing drugs should have punishments along the line of suspensions or expulsions from playing. By creating and enforcing laws in professional sports, society is teaching the youth that steroid use is wrong, and that there is punishment for people’s actions. It may seem difficult to try and contain the issue of steroid use; however, giving up is not an option. In order to decrease steroid use, society has to take action in the forms of education and legalization. No one can completely end steroid use, but even a miniature decrease in the amount of people using steroids will help. Even if only one person decides not to take steroids, it would mean that society is making progress toward controlling steroid
