Steroid Prednisone: A Case Study

Our family has a special financial need which unfortunately for my sweet mother, seems to never have an end. My mother has had multiple illnesses since she was born starting with allergies at birth. By the time she was two she began allergy shots and had two bladder surgeries because of infections which would send her fever up to 105 degrees. Then Junior Rheumatoid arthritis was discovered in her finger at age five which sent to Scottish-Rite Hospital in Dallas. Within two years the arthritis had moved into every joint on the right side of her body. To get through kindergarten she had to take eighteen aspirin a day for pain. Over the last eighteen years she has been fighting a mystery disease no doctor has been able to find a cure for or even find medicine to give her relief from the pain on a regular basis. At times she has not been able to stand on her feet because of the severe pain. She has a continued prescription of the steroid Prednisone so she can have it filled within hours when the pain immobilizes her. If this isn’t enough, a few years ago she fell at work and got a concussion which left her in constant pain. My dad bought a used spa and got it running for her to have a little relief while she was in the water. But since she cannot stay in the spa all the time, the pain once again ruled her life. When the doctors could not find where the pain could be coming from, they decided it was in her mind and gave her antidepressants as a solution. As you can guess by now, the medicines did not do anything for her. Last spring the doctors had her on so many medications we thought she was going to die one night. My dad rushed her unresponsive to the hospital and they finally got her to revive. That night was a wake up call to seek yet another doctor along with weeks in the
