This shows the meaning of stereotype by revealing that Jamila Lyiscott is African-American, and a lady, who is surprised by her ability to speak fluently, calls her articulate. However, because of Jamila’s ethnicity this is offensive to her, for the lady is only impressed because she believes someone from that race usually cannot speak that well. In society, ideas are usually related to certain groups of people. For example, when blondes are thought of they typically aren’t associated with being smart. In this case the idea of being inarticulate was being connected to African-Americans. Additionally, in another interview with Guy Raz, Maz Jobrani says, “A lot of times in Hollywood when casting directors find out you're of Middle Eastern descent, they go, oh, you're Iranian? Great. For instance, in the poem, “Labels,” Sarah Holbrook states that labels are put on people, they are called Whites, Asians, Africans, and Hispanics instead of acknowledging them as individuals. However, grouping and labeling is a waste of time because every person is created to be unique. Labeling based on appearance is wrong, for seeing someone’s personality is the only way to truly know them. The speaker says, “Grouping folks together is an individual waste of time. You can’t know me by just a look, you have to take a taste” (Holbrook).This evidence supports the idea of stereotypes because society often groups races, religions, genders, and etc. together. However, the practice of grouping people based on appearance is a waste of time and is considered to be stereotyping. A person’s outside appearance does not define a person; however, their true character does. Therefore, society cannot judge a book by its cover. In whole, every person should be known because of their personality and character rather than their appearance. In addition, in the story, “Desiree’s Baby,” Armand thinks he is superior to African-Americans. Desiree, who is basically a mystery when it comes to her background, catches the eye of this slave-owning man. Armand later marries Desiree saying he doesn’t care about her ethnicity, but when they have a child it turns out to be biracial. Armand starts to treat Desiree terribly and is angry towards
