Stereotyping Interpersonal Communication

Self-serving, stereotypical bias is as natural as breathing for most people. However, becoming aware of our perceptions, and how that influences our view of the world around us change can begin. By embracing a concept of practicing responsible perceptions with intuitive understanding, insight and empathy we can check the perceptions formed by our other five senses. Thus, adding to our algebraic impressions for a more complete perception. Additionally, it allows us to correct errors in the bias stereotyping interpersonal communications we generally have with others. A good example of this is the movie The Breakfast Club, in which five people take a journey though interpersonal communication beginning with their formed perceptions of each other being challenged by checking those perceptions, and finally correcting errors to improve their perceptions of each other.

In the text book, Reflect & Relate, McCornack defines perception checking as “A five-step process to test your impressions of others to avoid errors in judgement. “As previously indicated they each considered the other outgroupers so as disagreements arise they are punctuated by a belief that the other started it or was at fault. Each student also assumed that they knew the truth about the other, what they were really like.
