Stereotyping In Workplace

Improved Essays
The most effective way of combating stereotyping in the workplace is to treat every child as an individual and not to assume. Do not assume boys are more aggressive than girls, do not assume girls can sit quietly more than boys. Do not accept certain behaviours just because of who that person is. To combat stereotyping a positive approach is needed; build children’s self-esteem and confidence this will help them learn and develop and to be confident trying new experiences. Have a positive attitude towards each individual child and the family they are part of. Show them you respect their family values and traditions even if they are different from everyone elses. Never make any negative remarks about their traditions or their parenting skills.

How many female stereotypes have you heard of? How about their role in the workplace? The Office, an American sitcom, has a few. There’s the extremely driven woman in authority with a heart of ice and no personal life; everyone fears her, but in reality, she is an emotional mess. Or the passive, kind, maternal, reliable worker who everyone loves and never challenges authority to success.…

I found the article very informative because Kim Scott not only gave readers guidance on management but also descriptive examples of what they mean. The section that relates to me the most is when her boss criticized her for using the word um. There are many people who struggle with the word um during their presentation or when speaking. Honestly, I have a habit of using um too and one thing that has helped me is slowing down while speaking. To think of it, It is interesting to know that throughout my whole life, no one has ever said: “hey, try not to use um so much because you sound stupid.”…

Anytime we stand in front of a diverse audience regardless of what their gender is, we have to keep in mind that we need to stay neutral. What do I mean by that? Well, as the speaker, it's our responsibility to make the audience feel like they are all equally important. The speaker shouldn't use stereotypes of any types, or use any unbiased language. It's important that the speaker understands that he/she needs to be sensitive to certain topics.…

More than two-thirds (68.8 percent) of American adults are considered to be overweight or obese, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. In my presentation, I discussed why employers discriminate against overweight applicants and employees and also my opinions towards the topic. My presentation explores both sides of the spectrum: the employers and the overweight employees/applicants. Unfortunately it is common for overweight Americans to suffer from sever discrimination in the workplace because of stereo typical beliefs. However, some case studies have proven these stereotypical beliefs to be false.…

One of the professions that are underappreciated and underpaid is social work. That specific profession has quite a few stereotypes and one being that a social worker will take away your children. That is of course incorrect, but the ones that believe in stereotypes like this are simply ignorant people. A person that is not knowledgeable on the procedures that need to be followed and laws that must be obeyed by social workers might fall into believing stereotypes. I believe that we should all have a basic understanding on what the profession of social work is really about.…

Stereotyping allows individuals to look at another person or group and describe them to be something that they might not actually represent but society has made them and their appearance to become. Stereotypes can also have a negative effect on my work life because they will cause me to make assumptions about my coworkers and customers. Working at Barnes and Noble, we have a wide variety of people who come in to shop and buy coffee and it is important that I treat everybody the same no matter how they act and no matter how they treat me. When I talk to people outside of my racial group, I to tend to refrain from a lot of things that I would normally say because I don’t know how they will feel or react to it.…
