Everywhere you look you see someone stereotyping another. Usually it's cultural or racial discrimination, but have you ever realized that a certain age group can be stereotyped as well? More than likely you hear of teens and young adults being categorized based on their interests. How about old people? Do you ever hear the myths about the older generation? Even though old people are stereotyped as bored and lonely, some lead very full lives.
When you think about growing old do you ever imagine that you will be bored? Many elderly people are classified as bored because they don't have jobs or hobbies anymore. From personal experience of working with elderly patients in the medical field I have come to know that old people have plenty of activities that keep them far from boredom. Working as a CNA you must be sure the patient gets what they want, but you also want to encourage them to find a hobby instead of laying in bed all day. Many elderly people become lonely when a spouse passes away and their children move away and have families of their own. Lonely senior citizens are more likely to decline and die faster due to lack of activity in their spare time. To help with the loneliness, old people often have an animal to keep them company, spend time with their grandchildren, and social with neighbors or other residents in a long-term care facility. Even though not all old people are lonely, the best thing to do is make sure lonely people are well taken care of.
