Stereotyping has become a norm in today’s society. One of the biggest stereotypical scenarios that people seem to believe in is that fatherless children are destined to fail. A child is not “doomed” or “worse off” if they happen to lack a father in their life. There is no correlation between having a father and the ability of a child to succeed. Unconditional love, a peaceful home, and independence are three factors that can allow kids with no father figures to flourish. First of all, in order for a child to thrive all they need is unconditional love. Love knows no gender; whether the unconditional love comes from a mother or a father it is existent in the child’s life. In the book Choosing Single Motherhood, author Mikki Morrison wrote that

Due to only one paycheck coming in for the household, single mothers usually have to get multiple jobs or they have to work overtime. This leaves them with little to no time to do chores around the house, leaving it up to the children to pick up the slack. For instance, the Huffington Post published an article where a man raised by his single mother expressed that he had to learn to cook and clean since his mother was always working late (Alaburda). Children without fathers learn how to value money since it is usually limited in their household. This skill will benefit these children especially when they grow up because they will know how to budget themselves, a quality that a lot of children in the “ideal” household do not acquire until late in their adulthood. Besides this, having no father figure can be educational for the children in the sense that they are required to grow a back bone. The male has always been viewed as the powerful and dominant gender, without the traditional “protector” in the house the children have to learn how to defend themselves. Also, children raised by single mothers are inclined to being more motivated. Observant is one word that describes a child in their youth; they try to rationalize things they see on their own. Many of these kids watch their hard working mothers pick up extra jobs and late night shifts possibly missing holidays and birthdays in order to provide for the family and they are determined to work hard so that their future does not hold the struggles that their present
