Stereotyping is the way a person’s brain recognizes characteristics or traits shared throughout an entire group. This process is generally practiced everywhere we go; it affects the way we choose careers and how we act in a workplace. Consciously and unconsciously we stereotype everyone and everything. This is based on our growing understanding of life, categories, roles in society, and attributes, everything affects the way we perceive people, our actions especially and even our environment. We may not want it to affect how we choose our careers, but it does (Igbo, Onu, & Obiyo, 2015). Gender stereotyping is a problem that needs to be addressed, for the problematic ways it affects people in the workplace and the issues it creates.

It could be a job, a person, or a thing, but the characteristics you thought of to describe it could fit one stereotype or another. Gender stereotypes for men include they are seen as dominant, detached, masculine, socially accepted while women are seen as submissive, emotional, feminine, and socially abused. Stereotypes burrow their way into people’s minds, they influence hiring and how women or men are seen in their coworker’s eyes. One study done by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that when female and male faculty across America read identical resumes for a lab-manager 's job, they were more likely to rate the male applicant to be more competent and hirable. They also found that they were more likely to give the male applicant a bigger salary and more professional mentorship. Men ended up being the preferred choice for both genders, men and women (Christakis, 2012). Women make up 75% of the US’s low wage workforce, even in jobs dominated by women if a man comes in they achieve success faster. Tim Hunt, a Nobel Prize winner, made an international wave by suggesting women should work in separate labs from men because women cry and are more likely to fall in love or distract their male coworkers. While Hunt comes across sexist he just points out the negative gender stereotype on women. Specifically, nursing is seen as a feministic career, but men achieve success faster in this career based on the fact that men are perceived as competent, or capable of completing the job. Male nurses make over $5,000 more than female nurses a recent study found. Another study found that men are less emotionally invested than their female coworkers (Hu, 2016).
