Over the traditional four years of high school, I attended three private high schools: a coed, Baptist day school with about 700 students; an all girls non-denominational boarding school with about 70 students; and an all girls day school with about 400 students. The school I attended with the starkest contrast to the school described by Mary Bucholtz was the all girls day school, so I will focus on that school for my response. One point of interest worth divulging is that Bucholtz’s study occurred during the 1995-1996 school year, while I attended high school I will be discussing from 2013-2015. A question to consider is what my high school was like at the time of Bucholtz’s study, and what the high school she studied would have been like during my time in high school. Clothing trends and common form of slang evolve with time, so a certain amount of the differences between my high school and that described by Buchotlz can be credited to the time of observations.…

Mr. Keating is right to teach the boys at his alma mater to think for themselves. If they continued to follow Welton Academy's philosophy, they would get out to the real world, where no one is telling them what to do, and be completely lost. Also the strict rules, and regulations, of this school are bound to lead to more rebellious personalities. Mr. Keating knew how conservative and strict this school was, that is why he went to go teach his ways there, he knew it would make the biggest difference.…

In the article, “The Predicament of Doing School”, by Denise Clark Pope, co-founder of Challenge Success (formerly Stressed Out Students), a research and student intervention project, evaluates how students in school manage their social status, grades, and lives outside of school. She claims that the prep school, Faircrest High, may impede what it hopes to achieve, and instead may be promoting an environment with hostility and anxiety. She asks, “why must the students feel the need to manipulate the system and devise crafty strategies to get ahead?” The author develops this claim by first interviewing 5 students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds at Faircrest High School to get a better understanding of what exactly is being…

In many academic institutions a hierarchy is created based on unspoken rules. Students may gain access to the top of the food chain in school by having expensive clothes, cars, or by being apart of the “right” sports teams or clique. This social construct, which I have experienced first hand at numerous schools, limits the influence students have over their own self image. Through rivalry and exclusion, students must choose a parochial identity rather than developing their personality from cumulative experience. Too easily can one student be considered a jock or a nerd, and rarely do these two groups find mutual ground through academics.…

Stereotyping exists when someone perceives a positive or negative opinion about a group of people who they distinguish as being different than they are based on their own beliefs. Some groups include, but are not limited to age, sex, race, religion, disability, as well as, a plethora more. Recruiters interviewing for an available position must be trained not to cloud their judgment during the selection process of a candidate based on their own opinions. For instance, a group of managers including myself interviewed a candidate last week for an employee event coordinator position, afterwards a manger spoke up and stated he noticed she seemed a bit nervous and her face became red when she was speaking, in which I respectfully responded just because…

T-shirt or shirt, jean or pant, tie or no tie, these are among the hardest decisions to make. Some students tend to like being dressed up, despite the fact that they are just going to a regular school day. They ought to wear fancy clothes, colorful dresses, in which they need to check once or twice inside the closet until they have their preference, ending up being late to school. As the saying goes, rather than paying our time looking at our wardrobe, we can literally put on the school uniform to save time, dressed formally just like their peers. Indeed, in comparison to regular school uniform, those luxurious clothes are much more expensive.…
