Stereotypes: TED Talk

Decent Essays
This TED talk definitely had a lot of new information that I thought was amazing as well! I never knew how smart babies were as young as 18 months! It amazes me that they are able to think and understand our emotions when we show them, such as showing a distaste in one food and a love for another one. You are incredibly right when you say that that having a presence in our kids, or a kid’s life, is so very important. They are able to learn how to interact socially, physically and emotionally just by observing us. It is true when people say parents are a kids biggest role model/influencer

Everyone has heard multiple rumors in their lives. Some are constructed in a way that makes them seem believable while others are so outlandish it seems impossible to fathom how anyone could believe such a thing. A rumor could also cause both reactions from different people. One rumor is that Procter & Gamble’s, the parent company of Folders, Pampers, and Duncan Hines, logo actually represented The Devil. The logo in question depicted the moon and stars, with the moon also depicting a man whose beard held the sign of the Antichrist.…

Born Unbiased “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite,” says Nelson Mandela. Mandela’s words are often overlooked in the sense that hate is taught and learned not natural. Prejudice is extremely evident in society, but it does not come naturally; nobody is born with judgement or racism, and those around them affect their ideas. Everyone is born different, and children’s opinions grow based on the influences around them.…

When walking down the streets of downtown Chicago there are many eye-catching things to see: beautiful skyscrapers, architecture from all kinds of eras, shops with luxury items, and homeless people. Coming from a middle-class, white, Catholic family we were told since we were very young to keep our distance from “those” people while walking, as they might want to harm us or steal our belongings. I never realized just how close minded we were, my family never considered the hardships or reasons for why these people are left without a home and in some cases without a family. As it was mentioned in the article written by Marcia Abramson (1996): “Our prejudgments, influenced by our personal and cultural history, shape our thoughts and actions.”…

For example, people attend college for reasons beyond personal interest - there are always broader forces influencing the decision and ability to get a college degree. My family structure is composed of a firm and supportive family that encourages you to be your best in life and to achieve your goals. My family, ethnicity, gender, and my own personal interest have greatly influenced my choice to get a college degree. Most people have different aspirations have different aspirations in life.…

“Never judge a book by it’s cover”, this is a common and universally known adage. Furthermore, it simply means, individuals should not prejudge and draw conclusions based on superficial characteristics. However, in most of society, stereotyping and prejudging are the methods we utilize in determining a person's identity. For example, developing preconceptions about an individual from the way they speak, appear, act, or any other physical trait is indeed stereotyping. Additionally, the reason stereotyping is so popular is due to the fact that it is convenient to draw conclusions about individuals or groups of people based off characteristics that might correlate with images and conclusions that fit those characteristics.…

One whom denies their racist tendencies can still, in fact, be racist. Most are not immune to the hateful thoughts influenced by stereotypes, or biased media reports. Those hateful thoughts often manifest into racist ones, depending on the frailty of that person’s will and conscious. The main excuse when a person vehemently denies being racist, “Well I have [ethnic group] friends, so how can I be racist?” is the epitome of what racists believe. If they associate themselves with a minority group, then they are presumably given grounds to make racist comments.…
